What happened
On May 29, 2018, Roseanne Barr tweeted that Valerie Jarrett—a Black former senior adviser to President Obama—was the child of the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes. CNBC printed the line: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey called the statement abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with ABC’s values and cancelled the sitcom. Reuters and BBC recorded the same cancellation. CNBC noted that likening Black people to apes is a common racist attack. That trope is why the tweet is in this file. It is not a second alleged episode.
Barr apologized to Jarrett and to all Americans and said she was sorry for a bad joke about Jarrett’s politics and looks. That is her statement. ICM dropped her the same day, CNBC reported. A network cancellation and an apology are not a court finding and not a program for Black communities.
The Cookout read
Concern. Putting a Black woman’s face on an ape joke is the receipt. ABC’s decision is labeled as a business consequence, not a criminal case. Barr’s “joke about looks” line is labeled as her defense. This file will not pad the docket with unsourced extra incidents, and it will not treat an apology as erasing the tweet.
