What happened

In February 2021 TMZ published video of country singer Morgan Wallen outside a home in Nashville using the n-word. BBC, AP (via PBS), and the Los Angeles Times recorded the tape, his apology—“I’m embarrassed and sorry,” with no excuses for the language—and the industry response. Big Loud suspended his recording contract; Republic backed that decision. iHeartMedia and Cumulus pulled his music; CMT removed his appearances.

Those pulls were real. They were also not a criminal case. Variety reported in June 2021 that after about four months, stations owned by iHeartMedia, Cumulus, and other chains were quietly playing him again. That is public record that the radio penalty was not permanent. This file does not invent later chart numbers, and it does not treat resumed spins as a defense.

The Cookout read

Concern. The n-word on a neighbor’s camera is the receipt. An apology is his statement. Industry exile that later thawed is a market fact, not a pardon and not a program for Black communities. This file will not pretend the slur evaporated because the songs came back.
