Uber’s 2020 racial-justice receipt is $1 million plus a fee waiver

Uber pledged $1M to policing-equity and justice groups and later said millions of $0-fee deliveries went to Black-owned restaurants.

What happened

In June 2020, after George Floyd’s murder, Uber said it would give $1 million to criminal-justice groups including the Center for Policing Equity and the Equal Justice Initiative. It also said it would highlight Black-owned restaurants and drop delivery fees for them for the rest of 2020. A year later CNBC reported Uber’s figure of 3.5 million zero-fee trips.

Mixed. Named gifts to EJI and a policing-equity group are real as pledges. They are also small. Do not add waived fees onto $1 million as if Uber wrote a larger check.
