What happened: Black-business spending pledges

In 2021 and 2022, Target said it would spend more than $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025 and described a $100 million commitment to Black-led organizations. It also reported expanding Black-owned brands and a Forward Founders accelerator.

What happened: 2025 DEI and supplier-diversity rollback

On January 24, 2025, Target said it would conclude three-year diversity goals, end REACH as planned, leave some external diversity surveys, and rename Supplier Diversity to Supplier Engagement. The company called this a transition. Organizers called it a retreat from public commitments made to Black consumers and suppliers.

What happened: 2025 Target Fast boycott

Rev. Jamal Bryant and other Black faith and civil-rights leaders launched a 40-day “Target Fast” in March 2025 and later continued it. They asked Target to restore DEI commitments and do more business with Black-owned banks and suppliers.
