What happened

On April 12, 2018, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson were arrested at 18th and Spruce in Philadelphia after a manager called police while they waited without ordering. Video spread. CEO Kevin Johnson called the arrests reprehensible.

Starbucks closed more than 8,000 company-owned U.S. stores on the afternoon of May 29, 2018, for racial-bias education for nearly 175,000 employees. The city paid the men $1 each and funded a $200,000 youth program they requested. Starbucks made a separate, undisclosed settlement plus ASU tuition. The $200,000 was a city grant, not a Starbucks payment to the men.

In January 2021, Starbucks pledged $100 million by 2025 for a Community Resilience Fund, described as supporting neighborhoods with historically limited access to capital, including Philadelphia. That is a pledge. This file does not treat $100 million as verified full disbursement.

The Cookout read

Mixed. The arrests of two Black men, the training response, and the later community-fund pledge are on the record. A store-level racial-bias crisis is not erased by a later dollar pledge.
