Saks apologized after wrongly detaining a Black NBA executive

In 2023 Saks security in Miami falsely accused Washington Wizards GM Will Dawkins of shoplifting; the company later apologized, fired the guard, and donated to racial-justice groups.

What happened

On November 2, 2023, Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins—a Black executive—was stopped at Saks Fifth Avenue in Miami’s Brickell center on a false shoplifting claim. Andscape reported a security guard broke protocol, involved Miami police, and wrongly detained him; video showed misidentification.

What happened: Company response

In June 2024 Saks stores president Larry Bruce publicly apologized, said the guard was fired, staff were retrained, and donations went to racial-justice groups Dawkins named.
