Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police treatment of African Americans. On February 1, 2022, former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores sued the NFL and several clubs, alleging discriminatory hiring and sham interviews used to satisfy the Rooney Rule. AP later reported that a federal judge allowed claims to proceed in open court rather than league arbitration. The NFL has denied the allegations.
