In 1993 a federal judge approved an IHOP settlement paying \$185,000 over a 1991 Milwaukee incident of alleged racist service differences toward Black customers.

What happened

In December 1991 Black customers alleged racist differences in service at a Milwaukee East Side IHOP. The Los Angeles Times reported that in early 1993 a federal judge approved a settlement requiring IHOP to pay $185,000 over that incident—part of a wave of restaurant public-accommodations cases the paper surveyed alongside Denny’s and others.
