What happened

On January 8, 2018, H&M’s website featured a Black child modeling a hoodie that read “Coolest monkey in the jungle.” The New York Times reported the image was widely criticized because monkeys have long featured in racial slurs. The Guardian noted similar jungle-themed tops modeled by white children. H&M apologized and said the garment would be recycled.

The Guardian later reported protesters trashed H&M stores in South Africa over the same advertisement. That is public response to the anti-Black image, not a separate court case.

Concern. Global retailers do not get a racial free pass because a photoshoot was sloppy. The receipt here is the image of a Black child and the apology.
