What happened

In early February 2019 Gucci sold an $890 black wool balaclava sweater with a red-lipped mouth opening. NPR reported the house apologized and removed the piece after it was compared to blackface. That comparison is why the image landed as anti-Black, not as a quirky knit.

AP reported boycott pressure and that collaborator Dapper Dan wrote there is no excuse or apology that can erase that kind of insult. He said Gucci’s CEO had agreed to come from Italy to Harlem to meet him and community members. AP noted Gucci had not answered its email on that point. Spike Lee and T.I. were among public figures calling for boycotts or for Black designers in the room. The company’s response on the record here is the pull and the apology.

The Cookout read

Concern. Luxury houses do not get a pass because the insult came with a price tag. The receipt is the sweater. The apology and takedown are labeled as company damage control, not a standing program for Black communities, and this file will not invent one.
