Apple’s racial-equity dollars, as Apple counted them

Apple pledged $100M for racial equity including HBCU work, then said the total had passed $200M—company-reported, not Black-only.

What happened

In June 2020, Apple announced a $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative. CNBC reported Tim Cook saying the effort would focus on education, economic equality, and criminal justice reform, including historically Black universities and a partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative. In January 2021 Apple said the pledge would fund projects such as the Propel Center for HBCUs and a Developer Academy in Detroit.

In June 2023 Apple said REJI had more than doubled that initial commitment to more than $200 million over three years, across five countries. The same company release listed learner and HBCU/HSI figures. Those are Apple’s numbers, and the published scope includes Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Indigenous communities.

Mixed. A named, multi-year racial-equity program with HBCU projects is on the record. The later $200 million-plus figure is still Apple’s scorecard, and the initiative’s published scope is broader than Black Americans alone.
