What happened

On October 29, 2020, American Express announced a $1 billion action plan to advance racial, ethnic, and gender equity. Inside that plan was a goal to increase spend with Black-owned suppliers to at least $100 million annually, plus capital and education aimed at Black-owned small businesses.

In August 2022 the company said it had spent more than $1 billion toward the broader plan and announced a further $3 billion DE&I-related goal through 2025. That is American Express reporting on itself. The additional $3 billion was described as spend with suppliers from underrepresented groups and toward other initiatives—broader than Black-owned suppliers alone.

Mixed. A named Black-owned supplier target is on the record. The billion-dollar headlines are a broader equity plan, much of it procurement. This file does not convert company spend totals into an audit of Black wealth.
