What happened
In December 2015, Harvard researchers published a field experiment finding that guests with distinctively African American names were roughly 16% less likely to have reservation requests accepted than identical guests with white-sounding names. The NYT reported the working paper. That is academic field evidence, not a court finding against Airbnb as a corporate defendant.
Black guests and hosts had described “Airbnb While Black” for years. On June 15, 2020, Airbnb launched Project Lighthouse with Color Of Change to measure U.S. discrimination by perceived race. Brian Chesky told Axios the company still had not achieved its goal of reducing all bias. CNBC later reported Airbnb said it donated $500,000 to the NAACP and the Black Lives Matter Foundation as part of a larger reported $1 million.
The Cookout read
Mixed. The Harvard experiment is why the later civil-rights audit and Lighthouse program exist. Measurement is not the same as a clean record.
